What is the big silver hose on the back of a dryer called?

My mom and I were just cleaning out from behind our washer & dryer for the first time since we moved in. After pulling the dryer out some we discovered that the big silver aluminum looking tube that runs from the wall to the dryer is completely dilapidated. The people who lived here before us used to lock their cat in the laundry room and the hose has tons of little holes from the cats claws and it’s almost torn in two at one spot. What is this hose called and how do you replace it? Thanks!

It’s a flexible dryer vent hose. It comes in 3″ an 4″ sizes and you can get it in various lengths (not usually by the foot) and kits. Measure the diameter of your vent. If you have a gas dryer, get only the aluminum hose. Either one is OK for an electric dryer.

When you take the old one off (you’ll need a flat head screw driver), you can see how to put the new one on. It’s very easy. You just slip on the bracket, then slip the hose onto the vent. Move the bracket around the vent and tighten the screw. There should be instructions included in the kit.

Make sure the hose is not dragging on the floor or in a J. You want it to go as straight up to the exhaust vent as possible. Otherwise, it will collect lint and moisture. If it’s too long, you can shorten it, but if it’s too short, you should go buy a longer one. It’s not good to tape them together due to the nature of lint.
